Top Quilt Size Calculator
Quick answer: Most back sleepers need a quilt about 4" wider than their shoulder girth; side and restless sleepers need 8–10" extra. Choose a length rated for your height, one size longer if you like to cover your head.
How the calculator works
Quilt width is the measurement that most often goes wrong. A quilt too narrow lets cold air in every time you roll; one too wide carries extra fabric and down you have to heat. The calculator adds a margin to your shoulder girth based on how you sleep, then rounds up to a common maker width (48–64").
| Sleep style | Ground margin | Hammock margin |
|---|---|---|
| Back sleeper | +4" | +2" |
| Stomach sleeper | +6" | +4" |
| Side sleeper | +8" | +6" |
| Restless sleeper | +10" | +8" |
These margins are a starting point drawn from common maker sizing advice, not a law. If you strap your quilt to a pad, the straps hold the edges down and you can lean narrower; if you sleep in cold weather without straps, lean wider. Our quilt sizing guide explains the trade-offs in detail.
Length
Makers usually list who a length fits rather than its raw dimension. As a rule, Short fits up to about 5′6", Regular up to about 6′0" and Long up to about 6′6". Check the maker’s chart, since some cut generously for a hood-like draft collar.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure shoulder girth?
Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your shoulders and arms with your arms relaxed at your sides, over the clothes you sleep in. That circumference is your shoulder girth.
Should a quilt be longer than I am tall?
Most makers size quilts to fit “up to” a height, so a Regular fits sleepers up to about 6 feet. If you like to pull the quilt over your head in cold weather, go one length up.
Do I need a narrower quilt in a hammock?
Usually you can go slightly narrower, because the hammock fabric wraps the quilt edges around you. Restless side sleepers still benefit from extra width.
